Episode 3
Dr Chris is surprised in surgery, performs a gender reveal and has an exciting visitor, while Dr Mike treats an assistance pony with leg problems that threaten its ability to help others.
In this episode, Dr Chris trials a novel way of commuting to work, making the most of Bendigo鈥檚 sunny weather. His first patient, 13-year-old Bella, is an Australian kelpie rottweiler cross with a large lump in her abdomen. Dr Chris suspects it is a benign tumour but wants to operate to be certain.
At the equine hospital, Dr Mike and Dr Sarah鈥檚 first patient of the day is a very special pony named Sally. Sally is a therapy animal based at Flash Farm, where she assists people dealing with anxiety and depression. However, this ageing equine is having trouble with her back legs and has recently been dragging them as she walks. A trotting test reveals no immediate issues, but Dr Mike x-rays her feet to check for laminitis, an inflammatory condition of the hoof that can become debilitating if not treated early.
Wildlife carer Chris has a backyard sanctuary full of unusual animals. Today, two playful emu chicks need their gender checking to see if they are suitable for a breeding program. Dr Chris needs a sample of their DNA and the easiest method is to pluck some feathers - but they have to catch them first!
