Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
Clearing out our garage recently I found an old press cutting from the sports pages of my local paper. A brief match report of a footy game between two local Saturday league teams. It described one of the players scoring a very ordinary, unmemorable goal. His celebration was anything but. The article reports him ripping his shirt off and swinging it round his head. Running the length of the pitch and continuing - Forrest Gump-like - out onto the high street.   He was heard to holler ‘Get in you beauty!’ and other animated exultations at bewildered passers-by.
To be fair, I hadn’t scored for a long time. I was overcome. Enraptured. I’ve always been a bit like that.  Prone to wild exuberance and impassioned ‘yawps’ - as the poet Walt Whitman called them. I think such moments are good for us. Particularly in these often frustrating days of being cooped up, careful and socially distant. Finding safe opportunities to get the pulse racing, the blood flowing and the spirits soaring have made a big difference to me. Our local park has been a Godsend.  Headquarters for all manner of cobweb blowing shenanigans.
Cartwheel competitions, running races and endless frisbee. Our kids have found it helpful too. Admittedly, my biggest challenge recently has been to keep my inner-life buoyant. To fight off feelings of listlessness and spiritual malaise. Sometimes I find it all too easy to be outwardly positive and in goal scoring mood - but inside feel anything but. I don’t think I’m alone. I’ve seen how fear and confusion has been a debilitating daily reality for people. My Christian faith encourages me - in the words of one Biblical writer - to ‘keep my soul awake’.
To find space to ‘Unbutton my lips’ and tell God and those I love how I’m really feeling. I’ve been taking great inspiration lately from the spiritual life of an elderly couple in our church. Proud technophobes, they’ve made it their weekly mission to telephone and write letters to struggling friends. To listen, pray, and belly laugh. ‘It’s done us the world of good,’ they told me. So as life now becomes a bit less distant and more sociable, I’ll continue to look for ways to keep my spirit soaring. But I will try to keep my shirt on, Zoe.
