Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Steve Chalke, minister, speaker and social entrepreneur:
The ability to say the right thing at just the right moment, is a wonderful gift. If only I had it! Alas, my problem is that I鈥檓 usually far too insensitive, clumsy or slow 鈥 as my family will testify! The number of times I鈥檝e been left wishing 鈥渋f only my brain had been built with a faster processor!鈥 I have a friend. His name is Peter. Before I knew him, every Sunday morning for months he would stand outside our church building, just to listen to the sound of the singing filling the air. But then he鈥檇 turn and walk away 鈥 often in tears. He just couldn鈥檛 find the courage to come in. Peter grew up in a church where he learned he had to make a choice. 鈥淚 was gay and a Christian鈥, he says. 鈥淏ut I was told I couldn鈥檛 be both. I knew I couldn鈥檛 stop being gay, so I left the Church.鈥澨
Well, one day Peter finally found the courage to make it into our building. He never looked back, and soon began bringing his boyfriend, Sadiq, with him. It was some years later that Peter and Sadiq sought me out, and explained that they were planning a Civil Partnership at the local registry office. They knew they couldn鈥檛 have a church wedding 鈥 this was a few years before same-sex marriage became legal. But they asked whether I would be willing to 鈥減ray a little private prayer鈥 for them back at the church, after the ceremony. I looked at them. I paused. 鈥淣o鈥, I said 鈥淚 won鈥檛!鈥 There was silence. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not doing anything private or hidden鈥 I smiled. 鈥淲e鈥檙e going to invite the whole church, all your friends and family. We鈥檙e going to celebrate.鈥 For once, I had found the presence of mind to say what I wanted to say, at the very moment I needed to say it!听
The result; we had the most wonderful day. Peter and Sadiq made their sacred vows to one another. We celebrated, sang and prayed for God鈥檚 blessing on them. And I learned again that, just a little bit more reflection around choosing the right words at the right time, accompanied occasionally by the courage to then say them, can 鈥 just sometimes 鈥 make a giant life changing difference.
