Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:聽
Today is my daughter鈥檚 last day at her school. Onward and upward, elsewhere, next term. There鈥檇 normally be a big assembly where they鈥檇 sing the school motto: Reach For The Stars by S Club 7. A mini-graduation day, throwing mini cardboard hats in the air. And a chance to visit the new school, meet the new teacher, find out where the loos are. Instead it鈥檚 Reach For The Mouse now it鈥檚 all gone online. My daughter鈥檚 met her new class via video call. Thankfully she鈥檚 had a few brief mornings back at the old school, saying goodbye to old friends, old teacher, old desk.聽
It鈥檚 a weird end to the academic year. I think we like closure. They say when one door closes, another one opens 鈥 but if you don鈥檛 see the first door close behind you, it feels a bit... ajar. Doors left open, might feel a bit, I don鈥檛 know ...drafty? Without full-on graduations, summer balls or final get-togethers, we might have to celebrate achievements more individually. Draw a line under what鈥檚 passed, from afar. It can be unsettling. I remember St Paul鈥檚 reassurance to the church in the city of Philippi: 鈥淜eep putting into practice all you鈥檝e learned and received 鈥 then the God of peace will be with you.鈥 For me, school鈥檚 a distant blur, but I鈥檝e learned a lot this year. Hopefully it will stay with me. The writer and deep thinker GK Chesterton suggested this... 鈥淭he fatal metaphor of progress, which means leaving things behind us, has obscured the real idea of growth, which means leaving things inside us.鈥澛
Or put another way: when we leave school, maybe we take the good stuff with us, and I don鈥檛 mean our child鈥檚 library books we forgot to hand in. (Sorry. Dad job fail.) Perhaps with that door only half-closed on our academic years, we鈥檒l have a foot in the comforting old world, but a foot pointing forward, to new places ahead. Then, in the words of that singing septet in the school motto, we reach for those stars, climb every mountain high...
