From Laura Marks,听a campaigner for social action and interfaith relationships.

Come into my house and I鈥檓 duty bound to ply you with home-made food, drink, my comfiest chair and the biggest sloppy kisses from me and my dog.听听I generally stumble on the home-made but I鈥檓 a master at camouflaging a mince pie to resemble a strudel and my bought, delicious challah bread to look home baked.听Whilst I love the adult offspring who have kept us sane in lockdown, having friends over is something special, singular, sacred and obviously stressful.听So this week, with some trepidation and a great deal of scrubbing, scrutiny and sanitiser, I invited our friends Nic and Steve into our garden for the highlight of the week, Friday night dinner.听

Keeping one eye fixed rigidly on the ominous clouds amassing overhead, I ploughed on. With the cauliflower on to roast (something we never did to it when I was a child) and chicken soup bubbling (which as a vegetarian I don鈥檛 eat but do feel obliged to serve) I put my newly polished shabbat candlesticks onto the garden table.听听Grabbing my cardy I crossed my fingers firmly, ready for the long-awaited arrival of friends.听Jewish communities place great value on friendship, based on a shared pursuit of holiness, and traditionally we are not supposed to part from friends without exchanging stories from the bible.听One of the most famous biblical stories of friendship is found in the story of Ruth, a Moabite.听听She left her own people, her home and her friends after her husband died to remain with her mother-in-law Naomi, an Israelite.听听Their friendship was听based on shared values, love and a recognition of similarity not difference.听听鈥淲herever you go I will go鈥�, said Ruth, 鈥渨herever you lodge I will lodge. Your people will be my people and your God, my God鈥︹��

Nic and Steve eventually arrived.听听The shabbat candles wouldn鈥檛 light in the wind, the cauliflower was unwittingly wilting, and the soup was the second victim of giant blobs of rain 鈥� my hair being the first.听听We parted, with only a virtual hug, and not a single bible story but I was glowing, satisfied and replete having re-discovered the bottomless joy, even with the constraints of social distancing, of re-connecting with friends.听
