Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

听From Sheridan Voysey, Writer:

鈥淲ho can you call at 2am when everything has gone wrong?鈥 This question shook me to the core when I was asked it a decade ago. I had recently moved cities and wasn鈥檛 sure who I could call in my hour of need. That鈥檚 when I realised I needed to get intentional about making friends.

Life has been described as a series of daring adventures from a secure base. I鈥檝e come to believe that friends are that secure base. When we try out for a marathon or risk a new career, it鈥檚 friends who cheer us on. When the romance ends or family bonds break, it鈥檚 to friends that we turn. So I find concerning the recent YouGov survey result that more than one in ten of us have no close friends and another one in ten have no friends at all鈥攎illions of us lack this secure foundation to thrive.

After forty years studying friendship at Ohio University, William Rawlins describes a friend simply as someone we can talk to, depend on and enjoy. This all starts with contact, and part of my getting intentional about friendship involved making a list of current and potential friends, and scheduling in a regular drink or phone call with them. Biblical proverbs describe a friend as someone who keeps confidences, which got me thinking about vulnerability and trust. And the words we hear each Remembrance Day gave me another ingredient for friendship. 鈥淭here is no greater love,鈥 Jesus says: 鈥渢han laying down one鈥檚 life for one鈥檚 friends.鈥 What begins with contact and builds through trust is made strong by sacrifice.听

A couple of years after hearing that 鈥2am鈥 question, my wife and I suffered a significant loss. A friend named DJ travelled two hours to see me, and hear my anger and pain. DJ is a busy man with a family and plenty of things to do with his day. But he came. I did have someone in my hour of need.

A secure base to live from. Someone to talk to and depend on. The question now is whether DJ and others have a 鈥2am friend鈥 in me. For there are few better ways to make more mates than to be one.
