Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
He鈥檚 known in his beloved home city of Bradford - is always a lively experience. He鈥檚 loud and outrageously flamboyant. Spent decades trying to make community life more exciting and joyful. There鈥檚 not much Robin hasn鈥檛 tried to grab and keep people鈥檚 attention. He once created a 鈥楪ospel According to Queen鈥� event and dressed as Freddie Mercury - complete with vest, black moustache and tight white trousers. One Sunday in church I saw him smoke a cigar and drink from a beer can to illustrate a spiritual point. I鈥檓 still not sure what it was - but he had a great time. Robin鈥檚 unconventional, swashbuckling style has certainly rubbed off on me over the years.聽
As part of my talk once during a packed civic occasion, I tried to climb down the dangerously high pulpit while our organist played the Mission Impossible theme tune. It nearly ended in catastrophe. My clerical robes became snagged and I got stuck. Dangling helplessly over the Lord Mayor below me. I didn鈥檛 try that again.聽
Yet flamboyant stunts aside, Robin鈥檚 enduring impact on me has been as a trusted confidante, careful listener and gentle encourager. In good times and difficult ones. Oprah Winfrey once said that such faithful friends and mentors are people who make sure we are never alone and allow us 鈥榯o see the hope inside ourselves.鈥� That鈥檚 been my experience. Robin offered comfort and reassurance when I lost confidence at work. When my wife and I struggled to have kids. When my precious aunty died.聽
I鈥檝e found that the joys, trials and irritations of everyday life are always better shared with a wise friend. Someone to confide in and be accountable to. My Christian faith certainly doesn鈥檛 function well in isolation. It鈥檚 inherently relational - with God and those around me. I need help to stay on the spiritual straight and narrow. 鈥極ne friend sharpens another,鈥� the Bible teaches. Sharpened into a kinder, more understanding, generous person, hopefully. Bradford鈥檚 鈥楻ockin鈥� Reverend鈥� has certainly helped smooth away some of my rougher edges. I just need to borrow his Queen costumes now. I think our parish is ready for my 鈥楩reddie鈥�, Dermot!
