Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
I visited a commercial storehouse in an industrial estate last week. I pressed a buzzer and waited. As I did, a dishevelled young man shuffled up beside me. The security assistant ushered me in. But he told the young man where to go in non-parliamentary language. Seeing my annoyance, he assured me: 鈥淒on鈥檛 mind him; he鈥檚 only a druggie wanting to use the basement for a fix.鈥 I appreciate the man was only doing his job, but what does it say about our attitudes? Addiction is a hard word. It conjures up all sorts of unpleasant memories. But when you think about it, we are all attached to things we cannot do without. It may be over-eating or shopping; we can be addicted to the newest, the latest and the hottest.聽
Others are inordinately obsessed by technology, golf or football. We are addicted to habits and substances which provide a refuge for us when we are scared or depressed. And don鈥檛 forget the really destructive addictions like alcohol, gambling, fame, power or drugs. Deep down I know that healthy living happens only when I face my demons and learn to live peacefully in the real world without artificial aids. That may be the simplest definition of addiction 鈥 anything we use to fill the void inside us that we ought to face but are unable to do so. During Lockdown many of us realised how addicted we are to food. I was forced to look at myself differently when a friend sent me The Dieter鈥檚 Prayer.聽
Lord, grant me the strength that I may not fall Into the clutches of cholesterol聽At poly-unsaturated I鈥檒l never mutter聽For the road to hell is paved with butter.聽Cake is cursed and cream is awful聽Satan is hiding in every waffle.聽Teach me the evils of hollandaise聽Of Pasta salt and mayonnaise聽As for crispy chicken from the South 鈥 Lord if you love me shut my mouth.
聽To be serious though, the Serenity Prayer is more helpful.聽
鈥淟ord grant me the serenity聽To accept the things I cannot change聽The courage to change the things I can聽And the wisdom to know the difference.鈥
