Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

They say life is full of new experiences and you’re never too old to learn, which is why, despite things being the way they are, last week, thanks to some filming for Songs of Praise, I found myself having my first ever tambourine lesson. No, I didn’t know you could have lessons either. I thought you just picked ‘em up and shook ‘em but apparently not. My teacher was the lovely Xena, tambourine warrior princess and a Salvation Army tambourine expert. To give them their proper title, timbrels are a serious business in the Sally Army, so much so that there are timbrel squads, who practice formation playing for hours and put on complicated co-ordinated displays, sort of tambourine ninjas for Jesus.

Like I say, ‘who knew?’ Xena recently started her own tambourine group, with a difference, the difference being she prizes willingness to join in over everything, including rhythm. Xena welcomes all, if you’re can’t stand, she’ll get you a chair, too short to see, she’ll get you a box to stand on, young, old, all faiths and none, if you’re in the vicinity when Xena is shaking her thang, she’ll put a tambourine in your hand and tell you to just do your best. Unsurprisingly, I loved it and her. The bible has much to say about the need to find a place for everyone, the book of Leviticus says, ‘you shall welcome the stranger who rests with you and treat them the same as the native, love them as one of your own.’

Reminding me The Kingdom of God is a place of radical welcome, where a skills audit isn’t needed and love determines someone’s worth, and while of course there’s a place for those who excel, Xena’s tambourine gang was a full of generous welcome even for a clueless stranger like me. As the music started I banged away the best I could, and while I don’t think I’ll ever make it into the Sally Army’s elite tambourine team, I don’t think I did a bad job. ‘Did I do ok, Xena?’ I asked, ‘You’re smiling, so I’d say you did fine.’  And I’m improving, I’ve been practising in the garden with the radio on, I think the neighbours must be thrilled, I’m sure it was words of encouragement they were shouting.
