Pause For Thought
If there鈥檚 one member of our household taking these uncertain times in his stride, it鈥檚 our black-furred, silver-pawed cockapoo, Rupert鈥攚hose playfulness is getting him through heatwaves and lockdowns alike. Rupert鈥檚 joy seems based on the fact he has legs and he can run, and with his tongue out and ears flapping, he dashes through the darkest days. Most afternoons he waltzes into my office with an old sock in his mouth, tail wagging, coaxing me to play. Researchers have found that play does a lot for us humans, too. It helps us socialise鈥攖hose play fights of childhood helping us learn the difference between fun and pain. It helps us see new possibilities鈥攍ike the steam train and the plane, which both started as toys.聽
And with its ability to stimulate brain activity and nerve growth, play has been found to make us smarter, more optimistic, and more empathetic to others. When Rupert coaxes me to play, he鈥檚 giving me an opportunity to become more healthy and whole. The link between play and wellbeing hit home for me a couple of years ago. Exhausted from overwork, I realised I hadn鈥檛 just forgotten to play, but how to play. My remedy was to write a Joy List鈥攍isting all the things I loved to do, whether bike riding in the woods or browsing second-hand bookshops or doing photography. Scheduling some of these activities into each week helped me feel human again. In the Book of Job, stars are said to have 鈥渟ung鈥 and angels 鈥渟houted for joy鈥 as the universe was made.聽
Creation was a joyful, even playful, event. As Christians understand it, God has never needed a universe. You could say it鈥檚 his joyful act of play. And if we鈥檝e been made in God鈥檚 likeness, as scripture suggests, it makes sense to me that we鈥檒l be healthiest when our lives include some bike riding, kite flying, cake baking, or whatever playful pursuit brings us joy. We鈥檝e been made to play. This is a good reminder for me, because there hasn鈥檛 been enough play in this household during lockdown. Apart from Rupert, that is, whose tail is wagging even now. Time to revisit that Joy List鈥攁nd go and play tug with a sock.
