Sakari Oramo and the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra kick off this season鈥檚 live offering with a specially-commissioned work by English composer Hannah Kendall. Tuxedo: Vasco 鈥榙e鈥� Gama takes as its title a quote from American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat鈥檚 matrix of hieroglyphs, symbols and words, and it launches a voyage across the Atlantic that takes us via Eric Whitacre鈥檚 tender Sleep, sung by the 大象传媒 Singers, to the expansive, desolate sound-world of Copland鈥檚 Quiet City.
For the concert鈥檚 climax we plunge into the stormy waters of Beethoven鈥檚 revolutionary 鈥楨roica鈥� Symphony, noted by one early reviewer for its 鈥榮trange modulations and violent transitions鈥� 鈥� a passionate musical vision of heroism.
