Dolly Parton, the country music icon, chats to Zoe about her Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas, and new book, 'Songteller: My Life in Lyrics'. Dolly Parton is the most honored and revered female country singer-songwriter of all time. Achieving 25 RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards, she has had 26 songs reach number one on the US Billboard country charts, a record for a female artist. She has 44 career Top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and 110 career-charted singles over the past 40 years. In 2014 the RIAA recognized her impact on recorded music with a plaque commemorating more than 100 million units sold worldwide.
Graham Norton, the author, comedian and broadcaster, is on the phone to talk about his latest novel, Home Stretch. The story starts with a car crash that happens the night before a wedding and six young people are in the car with only three surviving. The story follows the driver over the following decades and the stigma, secrets and consequences of that night. Graham is one of the UK's most loved comedians and presenters, born in Clondalkin, a suburb of Dublin, his first big TV appearance was as Father Noel Furlong on Channel 4's Father Ted in the early 1990s. Graham now hosts his own chat show on 大象传媒 One since 2007 and has won 9 BAFTAs for his work.
Melanie C, singer songwriter and famously one fifth of the Spice Girls, has recorded two special live tracks at home for Zoe and joins her on the phone. Her 8th studio album has just been released, called 'In And Out Of Love', and has disco, electronic, and pop influences. Melanie鈥檚 solo debut album 鈥楴orthern Star鈥 was released 21 years ago.

Along with Tina Daheley on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, she and the team have the best start to your morning.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:
Being collar wearing clergy means that sometimes I鈥檓 called upon by own family in my official capacity, mates rates, of course. And this week was one of those occasions because on Tuesday last, I had the privilege of leading the funeral service for one of our matriarchs, Auntie Shirley. And despite limited numbers, social distance and no hugs and handshakes of course, I think it went as well as it could. My Aunt was, like Dolly Parton and all the women in our family, formidable, but despite her Yorkshire grit there was one thing she never quite excelled at, swimming.听
Missing out on learning as a child, lead to years of standing in the shallow end, until around a decade ago, when, encouraged by Grandchildren, she declared enough was enough and got herself a pair of armbands and wandered down to the leisure centre toddler pool. She cut a peculiar sight, there amongst the 2 and 3 year olds, this older woman digging deep and putting in the work, only pausing, when the wave machine came on. She got laughed at a couple of times, by those lacking in empathy and understanding, but it never seemed to put her off. And the day her armbands were discarded and she swam her first length unaided, was golden.听
It takes a lot of courage and character to learn a new skill later in life and not give up. When we鈥檙e little, there鈥檚 lots we can鈥檛 do and so every day is a day of learning but as we grow, fear of looking silly creeps in and so we stay in the safety of the shore, reluctant to venture into the unknown. The bible says 鈥楤ut you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, take heart, for your work shall be rewarded.鈥 I鈥檓 pleased to say Auntie Shirley was rewarded, when, the year after she learnt to swim she was crowned 鈥楿K National Senior swimmer of the Year鈥.听 She went with my Uncle George to a posh dinner to collect her certificate. And as she stood on the stage, older than the rest of the prize winners by at least 50 years, she beamed with pride. An example of living life with tenacity and determination, and a reminder that there are rewards to be claimed if we are brave enough to face the uncertain and venture out beyond the shallow end.
