Episode 3 of 6

The dedicated staff at two veterinary clinics care for family pets, livestock and wildlife in the idyllic countryside of Northern Ireland鈥檚 Mourne Mountains.

It is late winter in the Mourne mountains. Despite a blanket of snow covering the stunning landscape, the farms are working hard as the early lambing season is already underway.

Molly the West Highland terrier has been brought in with a mysterious sore. Martin diagnoses a cancerous tumour which needs to be removed quickly. But at 15 years old, Molly may not recover from the surgery. This presents an agonising decision for Molly鈥檚 devoted owners, Gerry and Maggie. Molly once belonged to Maggie鈥檚 sister. When she died, Molly helped Maggie cope with the loss.

Five miles away, young vet Darren has been called out on an emergency to a farm where a prize cow is struggling to deliver a calf. An examination reveals it is simply too big to come out naturally. Darren decides the safest option for both the cow and the calf is to perform an emergency caesarean section. It is a risky operation but without it, the cow will die.

Back at the busy clinic, with most of his vets on the road, practice founder Martin is forced to head into the car park for an emergency farm problem of his own. Local farmer Francie has arrived in need of help with Chocolate, his granddaughter鈥檚 much loved ewe. Chocolate is pregnant and having trouble. Not wanting to leave a local friend in trouble, Martin rolls up his sleeves and tries to deliver the lamb himself, but there is a surprise in store which means they are all getting more than they have bargained for.

Meanwhile, mischievous cockapoo Archie鈥檚 owner thinks he has recently swallowed a sock. Vet Darren decides it is too risky to wait for the sock to pass through his system so delivers an injection to make Archie vomit - only to discover that he has eaten far more than just a sock.
