Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
Today begins Radio 2鈥檚 Grief Season. It鈥檚 exactly two months since my Mother, Valerie Askew, passed away. It still feels early days with this grief. It鈥檚 raw and stinging still. Some moments it is the absolute magnitude of the situation which strikes me. My Mum is dead! I will never see her in this world ever again. It is so utterly final. In these moments I can barely breath. And these moments are no easier now than they were two months ago. But often it is the little things. The cat had scratched a hole in the carpet. I fixed it with a glue gun, a pencil, and some carpet threads. I did a pretty decent job. Normally I would have called my mum. She liked cool things like this, and would鈥檝e exclaimed how wonderful this achievement was! Her excitement would have been completely disproportionate to the actual skill involved.听
She was always enthusiastic! But I couldn鈥檛 call. I will never be able to call. And then there has been sorting her things. It has been BRUTAL. Later today we will hand over the keys to her flat, having spent five weeks clearing. 81 years of life which needed closing, and whilst we have been thoughtful about each and every item, we can鈥檛 keep everything. And so you find yourself throwing away her things: her hair brush, her slippers, some nail varnish. I literally stood at the bin sobbing because I was throwing away her pillow. I couldn鈥檛 do it 鈥 my son had to take it from me and put it in the bin. I feel forever changed. Not just because my beloved mother is no longer in this world, but because my journey with the grief since her passing has made me look at the world with such intensity.听
The Prophet Muhammad described our time in this world as fleeting - like being on a journey and stopping for shade under a tree. In my grief I am constantly reflecting on our brief time here. It seems to me that my attachment to the things of this world is very much decreased. Ultimately, life feels for me to be about the people we love, and how we treat them whilst there is life. If I am honest 鈥 I鈥檓 grateful for the grief. It hurts, but it gives perspective on what is important. Grief is a powerful teacher.
