Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:聽
Just last week, my wife and I went for a long walk in the glorious 鈥 if wet and windy 鈥 English countryside.聽 We were near the coast when we realised we were lost.聽 Now my wife is a much better navigator than I am 鈥 no surprise 鈥 but she really couldn鈥檛 follow the instructions she鈥檇 downloaded. Before long, we found ourselves on a stony beach with no obvious exit point.聽 We were about to double-back when I spotted a place to scramble up a hill towards civilisation.聽 Of course, we ignored the faded 鈥榥o entry鈥 sign and thought ourselves very clever as we started to head back to our car.聽聽
That is until 15 minutes later, when we found ourselves on the wrong side of a barbed-wire fence that stretched as far as we could see.聽 Then we noticed large signs 鈥 鈥榢eep out鈥; 鈥榥o trespassing鈥 and that the area was dangerous.聽 Fortunately, there were no warnings about unexploded ordnance, which we had seen on a previous adventure.聽 Eventually, my wife spotted a fence that could be pulled open and we escaped to the other side, I hope undetected. There are some obvious take-home from this escapade.聽 For example never, ever, take directions from a rabbi; 鈥榥o entry鈥 signs are an instruction, not a challenge. But it also reminded me that not all journeys have a clear destination, as in the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah, which will be read in every synagogue around the world this weekend.聽 God told them to leave their family and everything they held dear and travel to what became the Promised Land.聽 But God didn鈥檛 tell them where they were going, only the direction in which they should set off.聽 The Bible makes it clear that the real destination was not a place, but a set of values, and ideals 鈥 a journey to the self.聽
I believe that many journeys in life can be like this.聽 I suspect that many of us have set off somewhere and never got there, but instead ended up meeting someone or discovering something that has changed our lives.聽 It might be a new life partner, a job opportunity or an important self-discovery.聽 We just need to be open to journeys that don鈥檛 take us where we thought we were going, rather where we needed to be.
