Sam Heughan, the actor best known for starring in the hit TV show Outlander chats to Zoe about his new book, 'Clanlands', which he's written with his co-star Graham McTavish. From their faithful camper van to boats, kayaks, bicycles, and motorbikes, Sam and Graham write about their road trip with a difference, as they explore a land of raw beauty, poetry, feuding, music, history, and warfare. Unlikely friends Sam and Graham begin their journey in the heart of Scotland at Glencoe and travel from there all the way to Inverness and Culloden battlefield, where along the way they experience adventure and a cast of highland characters. In this story of friendship, finding themselves, and whisky, they discover the complexity, rich history and culture of their native country. Sam also starred in the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Spy Who Dumped Me' alongside Mila Kunis.

Plus Bob Harris chats about his 50 years in broadcasting; from The Old Grey Whistle Test and interviewing some of the biggest music stars in the world to presenting on 大象传媒 Radio 1 and hosting his weekly country show on 大象传媒 Radio 2 today.

Pause For Thought

Last week, on yet another one of those back-to-back Zoom calls days, someone stopped me in my tracks. First, she disarmed me 鈥淵ou鈥檙e a nice guy鈥�, she said. But then came the punch. 鈥淏ut a Reverend? Why? You must be sick to the back teeth with all that church hierarchy, hypocrisy and prejudice, the awful attitudes to women, to LGBT+ people, to people of colour?聽 It鈥檚 not a good look. Let it go.鈥� I was knocked for six. Of course, I鈥檝e thought all this through countless times before.聽
Doubt is as much part of my life as anyone else鈥檚. But for some reason this woman鈥檚 words really got to me. I feel the pain of my gay and trans friends 鈥� people I love. I ache because of the marginalisation they鈥檙e forced to endure. And, being mixed race myself, I know from my earlier years just something of the pain of being an outsider because of the colour of your skin. So, why DO I stick with it? Why don鈥檛 I just go 鈥楢WOL鈥�? In the end, a realised that I choose to stay for a number of reasons, and one of the chief amongst them is this; I thrive in community. The very first chapter of the whole Bible explains, 鈥淲E ARE made in the image of God鈥�, not 鈥業 AM made in the image of God鈥�. It鈥檚 about US. Together.聽
鈥榃e are designed for community with others! And, over the years, I鈥檝e learned that there鈥檚 something about being in community with those who are different from me 鈥� that sometime disagree with me 鈥� that is鈥ell, very good, though sometimes painful. But it is more than that. The best and most lasting relationships, rather than being based on the removal of differences, or on the careful avoidance of acknowledging those differences, are, in fact, built on confronting and embracing them. Without that, I figure that all I鈥檇 end up in, is a 鈥榗lub鈥� of sameness, an echo chamber doing nothing more than bouncing my own thoughts back to me - nothing questioned, nothing challenged and nothing enriched.聽
So, as I often say to myself, there is only one thing tougher than being committed to community. It is not being committed to community!聽 But today 鈥� please God 鈥� can I have some less challenging Zoom calls!
