Pause For Thought

From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:
My brother Wayne and his best friend Bradley-James were so close they were like batty and bench, as we say in Jamaica, or in other words, they were inseparable, and I wanted to be the three to their two. Wherever they were I was not far behind but they didn鈥檛 want me there, so it was more like two plus forcefully one. A place I was not allowed to go with them, was to boy scouts. Every week my mum drove them to the old church hall where the scouts met, and I would sit in the car and watch them being dropped off.听
My mum decided, I needed my own Wednesday night activity, and that was Brownies. Brownies rocked! There were girls like me with cut knees and dishevelled uniforms.听 We were free to roam the terrain of the playground, kicking footballs and pulling plants, and we were rewarded with badges for it. One Wednesday my brownie pack got invited to be a part of what would be the biggest formation of a youth choir Bristol had ever seen. On the same day, swinging by my knees on the climbing frame, I fell and broke my leg. Aside from the pain, I was devastated, I knew the expectation would be that I miss this moment.听
My Mum and my pack leader agreed, even on crutches it would be unsafe, but there was no telling me that. I practised for hours on end, for three weeks, and the night before the event I got a phone call from my pack leader, to say she had procured a wheelchair and I could go. I knew it would be a challenge, I also knew I would go, and I was right! We got to our designated听 places听 late听 as it was a mission with听 me in the wheelchair, but not too late to sing: 鈥淲e are the children, we are the meek鈥 belted from all around me it was as remarkable as I dreamt. In Islamic tradition, there is a saying: 鈥淧atience is half of faith and conviction is faith in its entirety鈥 鈥淚f you want to help, help children in need鈥澨 As we sang the last line and the fireworks went off, I learnt for the first time, a little faith and conviction, pay off.
