Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:聽
Tikki McCalla was a boy who I was in love with when I was a school. I would walk miles to get to his house, snuck out under the cover of dark, broke curfew and got grounded numerous times just so I could lay eyes on him and maybe even talk to him. I was sure we would eventually end up together, but when I realised he had a girlfriend, I was heartbroken. In my memory bank, Tikki was the first boy to break my heart.聽
I did that thing where my friends weren鈥檛 allowed to mention his name, and they didn鈥檛, so eventually the pain lessened and I forgot. I鈥檝e been thinking about him because I am writing my first poetry collection, and though I鈥檝e been writing and performing for years, this process has been way more exposing than I anticipated. Yes, I want to be a profound writer who is authentic, someone who can capture the hearts of people, but recalling my own heartbreaks, and insecurities and sitting with them is harder than I thought. My mentor Jacob SamLeRose keeps telling me, 鈥渢his is a process of discovery, that thing that you thought you were going to write about, should either shift or deepen鈥. Instead, most days I feel like I am drowning. Going through the process of thinking about the highs and lows in my life, Tikki came up. I decided to dig out some old school books and plastered all over them were love letters and diary entries about Tikki.聽
I was pleasantly surprised, my ability to describe emotions and set a scene was pretty decent. What I thought was the story of a broken heart, was really the start of my career as a writer. Ibn Al Arabi the 13th-century Philosopher said: 鈥淗ow can the heart travel to God, when it is chained by its desires?鈥 The childhood me was chained to the idea of being with Tikki not knowing God had a different path. I thought Tikki was my destination, but he was just a part of the journey. Sometimes it is not having the thing that you desire that helps you to grow.聽 I鈥檇 like to think wherever Tikki is now, I too was a part of his growth, like he was a part of mine.
