Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:
Never did I think I would be sobbing in floods of tears because I missed the drizzly grey of rainy days in England, but that is exactly what happened in 2012. I wanted to find myself and have my eat pray love moment, so what better way than to jump on a plane to a destination which I did little to no research about.听 In the wee hours of what would have been a cold January morning if I was in England, I arrived in Sudan overdressed in a roll neck and puffa jacket. The first three months were the hardest, I didn鈥檛 know the language and Sudan was comparable to nothing I had ever experienced. After a few days of acclimatising, the charity I was volunteering with placed me in an apartment in the middle of Omdurman and this was my new home.听
Days turned in to weeks, weeks into months and slowly my neighbours and students adopted me as the honorary Sudanese girl. About halfway into my year-long trip, I started missing little things, like warm blankets in cold weather, fish finger sandwiches and English Breakfasts. On one particular day I woke up homesick, I called my family but even that that did not cheer me up. One of my friends from the building visited me, and as I opened the door and the 45-degree heat hit me, I burst into tears like a big baby.听 My friend listened, comforted me and then walked me to bed and put me to sleep. When I woke up hours later, I was freezing.听听
The fan and the air-con was on full blast, which we were told never to do. I was covered with a blanket, and when I walked into the main living space my friend had made what I think was meant to be an English breakfast. She had tried to recreate home for me, and it worked. There is a Sufi tradition that states 鈥渉ome is more than bricks and walls, home is the place of hearts and love鈥 On that day I learnt to make a home in the hearts of those who love me, and Sudan started to feel more like home too.
