Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Harry Baker, a poet:听

This Christmas, more than a vegan alternative to turkey, beating my family at boardgames, or betraying my attempts at veganism by stuffing my face with cheese, I am most looking forward to seeing my nieces.

Our bubble Includes my wife and me, my parents, and my brothers family - Including Flo and Thea, who are excited about everything, but especially Christmas.

The last time I saw them was at Flo鈥檚 5th birthday in September, where I cemented my cool uncle status with the classic gift of some maths textbooks, which听amazingly were met with the same level of glee as a paw patrol police dog car that was opened five minutes later.

Even in the hardest parts of this winter, whatsapp updates of drawings they have done or videos of them singing a new song they have learnt from听the film Madagascar have consistently brightened my days. As disappointing as it is to not have larger family gatherings this year, I feel exceptionally lucky that听later this month I get 5 days of them all to myself.

Jesus鈥 disciples once asked him a tricky question: out of all them, who was going to be the greatest in heaven?

I imagine they听each thought they鈥檇 be a shoe-in. Instead听Jesus brought a child听forward and听said 鈥榰nless you become more like children you will not enter at all.鈥 Cue awkward silence and/or mic drop.

I鈥檇 love听to use that instruction to be childlike as justification for being a 28-year-old man who still gets excited about having potato waffles for breakfast, but when I see Flo and Thea I think I understand听what Jesus really meant.

There is an unashamed joy to how they approach every day.

Whether it is the consideration with which Flo says Grandad was 鈥減robably鈥 born before听Jesus听or听the simple genius with which Thea pretends to be asleep when she doesn鈥檛 want to answer a question from听her dad.

Mostly it鈥檚 the certainty with which Flo says 鈥榳e鈥檒l come and visit you next year after the Virus is over鈥, as if that was ever in doubt.

In a year that has often felt complicated and confusing, I hope to learn from my nieces and experience the unashamed joy of Christmas, and if we鈥檙e lucky maybe Santa will bring some new maths textbooks for us to play with as well.
