Mitchell and Webb and Gillian Burke

David Mitchell and Robert Webb join Zoe to tell her about the second series of Back on Channel 4, Gillian Burke talks Winterwatch on 大象传媒 Two plus it's The Why Workshop.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb are on the line telling Zoe all about their latest series of Back on Channel 4. The acclaimed sitcom, in which Mitchell and Webb play feuding foster brothers attempting to wrestle control of their late father鈥檚 pub, was one of several pitches created for the comedy stars as Peep Show finished in 2015. The first series saw charismatic and mysterious foster brother Andrew (Robert Webb) unexpectedly arrive back at the John Barleycorn, throwing the life of staid publican鈥檚 son Stephen (David Mitchell) into desperate turmoil. The second series picks up on Stephen after a lengthy spell in the Lyneham Abbey Wellness Centre, who鈥檚 about to come back, refreshed and re-energised, while Andrew has been treading water running a provincial pub. It took more than three years to make this second series. After having to shut down in November due to emergency surgery for Robert Webb and then again in March due to Covid restrictions.

Gillian Burke calls in from Cornwall to discuss the latest series of Winterwatch on 大象传媒 Two. She鈥檒l be hoping to catch a glimpse of the beaver kits which were born in the Spring. Ahead of the RSPB鈥檚 Garden Bird Count, Gillian will be giving us some tips on how to care for our avian visitors in the winter months and she鈥檒l be bringing us news from RSPB Old Moor 鈥 where she was stationed for 鈥楢utumnwatch鈥 鈥 catching up on news of feral Konik ponies, snipe and lapwings.

It鈥檚 The Why Workshop, and Zoe quizzes the QI Elves with more wonders and ponders, including your questions.

Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, she and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

A while ago I was solo climbing a mountain and from where I was I could see all the way to my goal: a peak a couple of kilometres away. All the weather forecasts I鈥檇 checked were saying clear skies the whole day. But as I got maybe a few hundred metres from the peak, a snowstorm moved in, and within a couple of minutes, I was knee deep in snow, and couldn鈥檛 even see a few metres ahead of me.

I find it quite terrifying, just how unpredictable the future can be. Even though we now collect 10,000 times more climate data than 20 years ago, our predictions for the weather aren鈥檛 any-where near 10,000 times more accurate, or 10,000 times further into the future. And I think the truth is, that my future plans, like the weather are unpredictable. Will my company be successful? Will I have a family? Will my pause for thought go down well? META.聽

The sudden snowstorm meant I had to change my plans. With only 1.5 hrs of light left in the day, climbing alone, numb hands and feet, and very low visibility, I made the decision to turn back before I鈥檇 reached the summit.聽

As I made the arduous journey down the mountain, I was聽annoyed聽at not having reached my goal. But as I moped through a particularly difficult snow drift, I found myself praying, and a thought came to mind: I was miserable because I鈥檇 been climbing only for the summit, I鈥檇 forgotten to enjoy the climb itself.聽

And this is common: a psychological survey of 3000 people in the U.S. revealed that 94 percent said they were simply enduring the present while waiting for the future.聽

One of the most freeing things about my Christian faith is that God鈥檚 love for me is not dependent on my achievements. In this knowledge I find myself less anxious about future success, I find it easier to enjoy the present. In the Bible Jesus lives out this idea. Jesus had the biggest goal imaginable: to save humanity, but he also attended parties, made deep friendships, learnt carpentry, and spent time with seemingly insignificant people.聽

In a time of uncertainty, Jesus reminds me that, whilst good goals are important, they should not overshadow the gift of the climb.
