Vaughan Williams's Songs of Travel in Building a Library with Mark Lowther and Andrew McGregor
Mark Lowther picks his favourite recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Songs of Travel. Plus Marina Frolova-Walker discusses several new orchestral releases with Andrew McGregor.
with Andrew McGregor.
9.30 - Building a Library
Mark Lowther recommends his favourite recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Songs of Travel.
It was the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams to write his first song cycle in the first years of the 20th century. But it wasn't until after his death in 1958 that Songs of Travel was published as a set, and since then it has been recorded by some of the finest baritones (and tenors) in Britain and beyond. From the heavy, resolute tread of The Vagabond to the wonder of The Infinite Shining Heavens and the assurance of Bright is the Ring of Words, it's a short but powerful cycle that takes traveller, performers and listeners on a beautiful and moving journey.
