Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I know it鈥檚 all about Tiny Happy People on the show this morning.

It鈥檚 a long time since my three children were tiny 鈥 they鈥檙e 25, 21, and 19 now, but their tiny years is a time that I will forever treasure, and represents a truly joyous period of my life. Although at the time it was utterly exhausting!

They were a constant source of laughter. My memories of them as tiny happy people brings me a swell of happiness. But I have more than memories 鈥 I actually have their own videos. We gave them a video camera and the films they made are just wonderful. We can literally see the world through their tiny eyes. It is a world of fun, of dancing, and joy鈥 as well as them negotiating.

The video camera was all part of their home-schooling, as we home-schooled them for a number of years, until the eldest was about ten. We would do a couple of hours of work in the morning, and then let them do their thing鈥 Art, craft, building, gardening, reading, writing stories, and of course film-making.听听

People would ask 鈥 鈥淎ren鈥檛 you worried they鈥檒l fall behind.鈥 I was never sure about that question. Fall behind who? Who are they racing against? We just tried to provide an environment where they could explore and play. It wasn鈥檛 perfect 鈥 but whenever I doubt myself I look at the videos and I see happy humans.

One thing I held to, then and now, is 鈥淭he Constant Conversation鈥. I constantly talked to them, and never in baby language either. I constantly explained to them what I was doing 鈥 at the shops, in the house, when cooking. I would talk them through their tantrums. I remember sitting on the floor of Woolworths for about 20 minutes when one of them wanted a toy that I wouldn鈥檛 buy. When they had finished screaming 鈥 we hugged, and went home.

There is so much pressure to be the perfect parent. I certainly wasn鈥檛. It wasn鈥檛 idyllic, and nor is it now. Every stage of their lives has had ease as well as trials. But I tried to always let them know that they were loved, and to not sweat the small stuff.听

The Prophet said, 鈥淭he best of you is the one kindest to their families鈥, and he extolled love and mercy towards children. I reckon our tiny people deserve just that.
