Haemochromatosis UK

Haemochromatosis UK is dedicated to supporting people affected by genetic haemochromatosis, one of the country’s most common genetic conditions. Almost 1 in 150 people in the UK are affected, yet most people don’t know they have it, until it’s too late.

We help over 10,000 families every year to live well with the condition. Diagnosed early, haemochromatosis is manageable and not life-limiting.

Our charity trains 1,000 GPs and nurses every year in the timely diagnosis and care of people affected. Treatment is simple and cost effective; early diagnosis saves lives.

A new diagnosis can be frightening and confusing. Haemochromatosis UK runs regular support groups for families affected. We explain how to live well with the condition and provide information and advice to help people manage their symptoms and thrive, not just survive. This is one of our support groups in Derry, Northern Ireland.

We support our hard-working NHS with clinical education

We support our hard-working NHS with clinical education
Early diagnosis really does save lives. Although it’s common, genetic haemochromatosis is rarely diagnosed. Our charity provides training and clinical education to GPs, nurses and other healthcare practitioners to help clinicians spot the early signs of haemochromatosis and deliver high-quality care that enables people live long and well with iron overload.

We help to raise public awareness of iron overload

Tricky to say, impossible to spell – most people have never heard of genetic haemochromatosis., yet it’s one of the UK’s most commonly undiagnosed genetic conditions. Our charity raises public awareness of the condition. We provide genetic counselling support and trustworthy advice to families affected. In 2020 our volunteer-led information and advice line helped over 1800 people with their worries and concerns.
