Nubya Garcia鈥檚 mixtape

Verity Sharp shares a mixtape from saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia. Plus traditional cattle whispering from Burundi, Tuvan throat singing and Swedish pipe organs.

Verity Sharp shares a mix from award-winning tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader Nubya Garcia. A luminary of the London jazz scene, Nubya performs as a soloist and is a key member of bands such as N茅rija, Maisha and the Theon Cross Trio. Her debut album SOURCE, released last year, was a reflection on her roots and the many places she views as home, with infusions of afro-diasporic sounds. She is also a frequent DJ with a monthly show on internet radio station NTS.

Elsewhere in the show, there鈥檚 traditional cattle whispering from Burundian In膩nga player Joseph Torobeka, playing the ancient melodies used to keep cows calm. There鈥檒l be Tuvan throat singing from Yat-Kha, as well as Swiss acoustic rhythms from Meril Wubslin and Kenyan industrial grindcore from Duma. There鈥檚 also a new release from Swedish pipe organ player Anna von Hausswolff inspired by the Sacro Bosco, a 16th-century Italian garden filled with bizarre statues and locally known as 鈥楶ark of the Monsters鈥�. Plus a piece made from 鈥榟appy sounds鈥� by Scottish artist Tommy Perman, which he offered to listeners in exchange for a positive message.
