Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves : International Women’s Day Special
Seonaid Aitken looks ahead to International Women's Day with a session from vocalist Georgia Cecile plus a home DJ set from Ali Affleck celebrating pioneering female band leaders.
Seonaid Aitken looks ahead to International Women’s Day with live music from award winning vocalist Georgia Cecile and a specially assembled band for tonight’s session. Pianist Richard Michael pays tribute to the women who have shaped his musical life in this week’s Song Book. Plus we join singer Ali Affleck from her music library in Edinburgh for a cosy home DJ set and stories giving us a musical insight into the lives of four pioneering female artists – pianist/singer Lil Hardin Armstrong , the blues alto player Vi Redd and multi-instrumentalists Valaida ‘Little Louis’ Snow and Blanche Calloway - women who in their day challenged the widely held notion that women were not viable band leaders and whose creative spirit continue to inspire a new generation of jazz artists.
