Lucy Parham chooses her favourite recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto No 24 in C minor, K491.
Mozart composed his much-loved Piano Concerto in the winter of 1785-86, shortly before the premiere of the Marriage of Figaro. Despite the compositional proximity of the two works, they reveal very different sides to Mozart's compositional personality, the opera being bright and upbeat while the piano concerto is much darker and is one of only two minor key piano concertos in his entire output. The Piano Concerto in C minor is also different from the earlier concertos because it uses a much larger orchestra including oboes and clarinets. The premiere is thought to have taken place at Vienna's Burgtheater in April 1786. Beethoven is known to have greatly admired Mozart's Piano Concerto No 24 and exclaimed to his friend, Cramer, that he would never be able to do anything like that.
