Stephen Mulhern and Andria Zafirakou

Stephen Mulhern tells Zoe about the latest series of his hit ITV game show In For a Penny. Andria Zafirakou, the global teacher of the year from 2018, tells Zoe about her new book.

Stephen Mulhern tells Zoe about the latest series of his hit ITV game show In For a Penny, and he has a special challenge for the team. In this new series Stephen will be asking the residents of Torquay, Cambridge, Sheffield, Chester, Barry Island, Blackpool and Southampton if they have a penny to be in with a chance to win a grand. In For a Penny challenges contestants to five rounds of hilarious games; if they win all five rounds, including the infamous stop-watch game, they bag themselves a whopping 拢1000. Stephen is a TV and radio presenter and magician who's known for starring on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, hosting Catchphrase and presenting on Heart.

Andria Zafirakou, the global teacher of the year from 2018, tells Zoe about her new book - Those You Can, Teach. At her school where over thirty languages are spoken, she sensed urgent needs; mending uniforms, calling social services, shielding vulnerable teens from gangs. And she tailored each class to its pupils, fiercely believing in the power of art to unlock trauma, or give a mute child the confidence to speak. So in 2018, when Andria won the million-dollar Global Teacher Prize, she knew exactly where the money would go: back into arts education for all. Andria was born in north-west London to Greek-Cypriot parents and attended state schools in Brent and Camden. She has worked her entire teaching career of fourteen years at Alperton Community School, where she is an art and textiles teacher and associate deputy headteacher.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Today is the 1st听of Ramadan, the month of fasting, where Muslims the world over will fast from pre-dawn until sunset. Not drinking or eating for long hours is physically demanding, but also demands psychological and spiritual strength.

It is a practice to train mind, body, and soul. For me, I believe humans are all of these dimensions.

In the Muslim narration of creation, Adam was created from clay 鈥 his physical dimension. God breathed ruh 鈥 spirit鈥攊nto him 鈥 his spiritual dimension. The Merciful then taught him the names of all things 鈥 granting him cognition 鈥 the dimension of the mind.听

Mind, body, and soul 鈥 all elements of us. Although I feel that often we compartmentalise ourselves, and mark these things separately:

鈥淚t鈥檚 prayer time 鈥 this is soul time鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 studying 鈥 this is mind time鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 at the gym 鈥 this is body time鈥

I find however, that Ramadan provides an听opportunity to rebalance and integrate every aspect, as a month of fasting gets you to hit the pause button on answering any and every calling of the body. Hunger isn鈥檛 met with eating. Thirst isn鈥檛 met with drinking.

And in this way, natural physical desires are quietened and room is made for our other dimensions to come to the fore. By becoming conscious over our physical instincts, the idea is to gain mastery over them, and hopefully begin to harness our consciousness to recognise and respond to other elements within ourselves.

By mid-May, Ramadan will be over 鈥 and there will be celebrating with some pretty tasty food, it has to be said! But by then, experience of 30 plus years of fasting tells me it will be a strange feeling. Absolute gratitude at being able to eat and drink normally after long fasting days, but I know also there will be sadness as Ramadan provides a beautiful communal experience. Even in Lockdown 鈥 you feel a sense of togetherness. Knowing you are part of a community of people all striving to engage and commit to something special, provides an energy and beauty which is hard to describe.听

But until then, the month will provide an opportunity to gain mastery over the body, and my soul will have been nurtured. Indeed, I hope, I will return after Ramadan with a healthy balance of mind, body, and soul.
