Pause For Thought
I wish my mother were alive today to see the way the country has appreciated the incredible work of our dedicated nurses from all around the world. When she arrived in the UK from India in the 1960s her experience was very different. Every day she found herself on the receiving end of racial abuse, prejudice and discrimination. She told me how some of her patients were afraid for her to touch them because she was brown. How others demanded to be treated by white nurses. And how taking the bus home each day frightened her.听听
听
But my mother had a plan. Each weekend she would cook up vast amounts of rice and curry and invite anyone and everyone to come to her house and share food with her. This was her one-woman resistance campaign against racism. Her weapons were hospitality, kindness and love. Before long half it felt like half of Brighton had been a guest in her home.听
听
My mother was inspired by her Christian faith, and the verse in the Bible that says:听鈥淒o not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.鈥澨
听
What a challenge I think this verse is to our natural inclination to return evil with evil. The words encapsulate Jesus鈥 approach to life and death. He charged his followers to turn the other cheek when attacked and to bless those that persecute them. And when Jesus was betrayed by a friend, falsely charged by corrupt officials, and crucified by order of the state, he nevertheless offered forgiveness for all those responsible for his death.听
听
Instead of hate escalating into more hate, I believe we are presented with an alternative. Like a Judo move, overcoming evil with good takes the momentum of an opponent鈥檚 attack and turns it into a counterattack. It disarms lies and violence with truth and compassion.
听
I believe wholeheartedly in the power of truth and compassion I have seen how they can pave the way for peace and reconciliation, for understanding and unity, for friendship and forgiveness.听
听
I also believe in the power of curry and rice.听听If you don鈥檛 believe me, then perhaps we should get together over the force for good that is a plateful of my mother鈥檚 special recipe mutton curry, basmati pilaf and khasi vegetables.听听
