One Year Out - The PopMaster Story

Rob Brydon quizzes Ken on the fastest 3 in 10, the longest tie and April 1st editions that fooled him, with help from Clare Grogan, Shaun Wallace, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders

Rob Brydon quizzes Ken Bruce on the most popular daily music quiz on Radio 2, which began in 1998. Rob is happy to be talking in depth to Ken, rather than impersonating him – although that may happen too – he has some canny clips from the archives and fiendishly tricky bonus round questions on topics such as Red Red Wine and On The Road Again. Richie Anderson will be keeping score to see if Ken can remember all the key events.

They will hear from the first competitors on PopMaster – a younger brother who has never lived down being beaten by his older sibling and on the very next day in 1998 the first person to score maximum points. Ken will also reveal whose shower proof radio became covered in limescale and why there was a cupboard full of foot pumps left in the PopMaster office by mistake.

Rob himself will remember both competing and pushing the PopMaster jingle buttons, alongside Pat Cash, Dawn French, Tim Vine, Jennifer Saunders, Steve Cram, Daley Thompson and Clare Grogan, who is still asked to join proper pub quizzers after her unexpected victory.

Fortunately’s Fi Glover explains why she always Stops For PopMaster at 10.30, despite divided loyalties to Woman's Hour.

Ken will also be put on the spot himself by Shaun Wallace as he attempts to Beat The Chaser. Paddy O’Connell recalls refreshments were needed after PopMaster was broadcast live from the searing heat in Baku, as part of Eurovision in 2012 and Phil Swern promises all questions are equally difficult.

You’ll also hear the fastest 3 in 10, the longest tie break and the April 1st editions which even fooled Ken.
