The Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital, Coventry has seen a 30% increase in patients presenting with mental health concerns. Under section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA), Emergency departments are a designated place of safety for people in mental health crisis.
But with 15 ED patients being treated for mental health needs in one day, consultants are limited in what they can do. Faced with cases of self-harm and suicide, NHS staff must deal with a dwindling number of mental health beds when trying to give patients the care they need.
