ACT II

Scene 1

Alfredo and Violetta have been living together for several months in a country house not far from Paris. Alfredo savours his joy of living with the one he loves. Annina, the servant to Violetta, lets Alfredo know that his mistress sells everything she owns to be able to deal with the couple's expenses. Remorseful for not knowing about this money problem, Alfredo decides to settle matters and go to Paris.

Violetta enters and asks where Alfredo is. She is surprised at his hasty departure for which she does not know the reason.听 A letter is brought to her: it is from an old friend, Flora, who invites her to a party.听 Giorgio Germont, Alfredo鈥檚 father, introduces himself. He asks the young woman to put an end to her affair with her son because Violetta's reputation jeopardizes the upcoming nuptials of Alfredo's sister. Violetta ends up agreeing with some resignation.

Convinced that the best way to escape Alfredo is to return to her past habits, Violetta decides to accept Flora's invitation and leave her lover a letter announcing the break-up to him. On his return, Alfredo notices the absence of Violetta but discovers, reading the mail from Flora, where he can find her and goes to get revenge for the offense.

Scene II

Guests start arriving at the masked ball given by Flora. When Violetta enters in the company of the Baron Douphol, Alfredo is busy at the gaming table. Violetta claims she took an oath to run away from him and, reluctantly, announces that she loves the Baron.

Alfredo then calls the guests and informs them that Violetta has dissipated the fortune she possessed out of love for him. 听To free himself from this shame, he throws his game gain at the foot of the young woman, proving to everyone that he paid her back.听 Germont enters in his turn and reproaches his son for his unworthy conduct.

ACT III

A few months later, Violetta finds herself alone and sick.听

The doctor visits her and announces to Annina that the young woman will die soon. Alone now in her room, Violetta rereads a letter from Germont: " I revealed your sacrifice to Alfredo. He will come back for your forgiveness. I too will come鈥 鈥. But he is late, Violetta doubts their coming and is delirious. Alfredo arrives, takes her in his arms, asks forgiveness and assures her that nothing can never separate them. Germont appears with the doctor and realizes the dramatic consequences of his actions ...

After a last sigh, Violetta dies.
