Pause For Thought
I’ve been really enjoying the running story on bees on the show.ÌýÌýI discovered a couple of things about them that nobody told me when I was young.ÌýÌý
Ìý
For example, they are excellent security guards!ÌýÌýI had a friend who was restoring a small castle and the local lads kept turning up at night, vandalising the bits he was rebuilding, and breaking into the container where he stored his tools and materials.ÌýÌýHe tried everything – signs threatening all sorts of dire consequence, CCTV – nope, didn’t deter them.ÌýÌýHe was, however, a bee keeper so he hit on a brainwave – he moved his hives to the site. Well, theÌýlads never bothered him again!ÌýÌý
Ìý
But the thing that fascinates me is that, apparently, bees can see ultra-violet light.ÌýÌýThey see colours that we can’t.ÌýÌýAnd, naturally, the flowers have evolved to emit those colours to attract them.ÌýÌýSo, when we see a yellow flower, it’s not really yellow –Ìýfor the beesÌýit’s… well… blubalubalub … something we can’t see.ÌýÌýAnd that’s the real colour, the yellow we see is irrelevant, it’s the blubalubalub which is its true colour.
Ìý
Which, naturally, got me thinking.ÌýÌýSee this religion stuff that I believe in…not everyone believes there’s a God, or that prayer has any effect, or even that there might be ghosts or anything beyond what we can see or figure out.ÌýÌýBut if the bees can see something beyond the human spectrum, and live their lives based on that, then maybe it’s not such a daft thing to have a faith, to believe in things we can’t entirely see or prove, to live life based on spiritual values; like trusting God, praying, living simply, giving stuff away, believing in life after death, forgiving your enemies…Love…to name but a few.
Ìý
And, of course, what I believe – and what I’ve found - is that this spiritual dimension, seems to me to be every bit as real as the things I see and experience in the usual four dimensions, and like the bees I try to live my life based on what I see there.
Ìý
Bees!ÌýÌýThey’ve been overlooked, undervalued and turn out to be essential for life on the planet – hey! – that’s got me thinking again about faith!
