Pause For Thought
I’ve been thinking about the idea of unity and how special that can be at times. I’m the Best Man for a friend of mine who is getting married this Friday. I had planned his stag-do months in advance and we were initially planning to have dinner on the Saturday just gone after a day of activities. Of course this was before we knew that England would be playing in the quarter-finals of the EURO’s.Ìý
Ìý
The moment we were all aware of that, I was summoned by the fellas in our Whatsapp group chat to make sure that the stag do involved watching the game, and after much scrambling and about 67 phone calls, I eventually found a place. We had dinner then went downstairs to a screening room to see England win 4 nil against the Ukraine.Ìý
Ìý
As we were celebrating one of the goals, I had a bit of a weird moment where life seemed to be moving in slow motion for a bit. I looked around and saw the group that I was with. People of different races, different classes, and from different backgrounds. I looked at some of the fans in the stadium and saw the same thing. I realised that this moment didn’t just feel special for me because England won. It felt special because I was with people that I care about. Despite the differences we may have, in that moment football united us.Ìý
Ìý
I feel like so many things can potentially divide me and my family, or my friends, or the people I work with. This can range from politics, to religion, to ethnicity and probably much more. It can be so exhausting and overwhelming. And so I really value when I find common ground.Ìý
Ìý
It’s one of the things I love about faith. In a world where it’s quite easy to spot differences, the Christian faith chooses love as common ground. Love makes me feel included and accepted.Ìý
Watching fans across the country cheer for National team players who might play for different club teams to who they support, or might hold different views to them, really challenged me to try harder to find common ground with people. Things that help bring us together. Things that help unite us. Bit of a cliché but I feel like there really is strength in numbers, and power in realising that we aren’t alone.Ìý
