Cheltenham Festival 2021: Lawrence Power and Huw Watkins
Violist Lawrence Power and pianist Huw Watkins play Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata.
This week's series of live lunchtime recitals celebrating Radio 3's New Generation Artists past and present culminates with a welcome return to the Cheltenham Music Festival of two of Britain's foremost musicians, viola player Lawrence Power and pianist Huw Watkins. A member of the NGA scheme in the noughties, Power is one of our most noted violists, with a busy international career. Until recently composer in association with the 大象传媒 National Orchestra of Wales, Huw Watkins is also much in demand as a recitalist. Their programme in the historic setting of Cheltenham Town Hall includes a work specially commissioned by Lawrence Power during lockdown from Garth Knox. "Quartet for one" musically depicts a viola player's dream of how he is giving a performance of a string quartet, whereas in fact, he is playing alone to an empty concert hall and Rebecca Clarke's expansive sonata for her own instrument, the viola, which she wrote in 1919 to great acclaim.
