Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I鈥檓 not proud to say it, but the other day I got into a bit of an ugly argument with a friend of mine.聽聽But do you know what?聽聽It turned out to be a good thing! I鈥檒l explain鈥 I lived most of my life feeling like a failure. This dented my confidence and led to me isolating myself from those who love me the most. People wanted to be around me, but because I feared being found out, and I struggle to be consistent in relationships, it felt easier to keep people at bay.聽

I later discovered I am dyslexic and I have ADHD. When the initial diagnosis came through, I was this weird mix of distraught on one hand - because of the negative stigma associated with both, and relieved on the other - finally I had the answers to why my brain felt like it was racing a million miles ahead of my body, and why I had to go all around the houses just to get to a simple answer.

Over the years, I learnt how my brain works and how neurodiversity can be a super power rather than a hindrance. My confidence grew and I found my lane in life, however there is no guidebook on how to suddenly allow people into your life. That鈥檚 why I had the argument with my friend鈥 both of us had valid point of views and were not budging, until she said 鈥渟is, you鈥檙e frightened of being vulnerable, all I want to do is love you, see you and celebrate you, let us in鈥.聽

Of course Zoe, I cried, in that moment I realised I spent a lot of time running away from people, but there was someone running towards me. Egyptian American Author Yasmin Mogahed once said: 鈥淪eek the ones who never stop caring, who break down your walls, and help you come back to yourself... seek those who help you hear your own heart鈥. This quote reminded me that I have an abundance of people wanting to love me, I just have to be vulnerable enough to let them in. I think that鈥檚 true of a lot of people. So now, I am committed to a journey of learning to be loved.
