Great Britain's women are the defending champions but it hasn't been an easy Olympic cycle, with retirements, injuries and a new head coach, Mark Hager. They start their Olympic title defence against Germany in Pool A. Elsewhere, surfers go head-to-head in heats, each lasting between 20-35 minutes, during which an athlete might typically ride 10 to 12 waves. The manoeuvres performed on every wave they ride are judged, with their top two wave scores determining who progresses to the next round.
