Ep 615 - Katie Derham joins with a new series of Classical Cut & Paste

Shaun is joined by the face of the Proms 鈥 Katie Derham to discuss the role of borrowing and copying in classical music and how this relates to sampling in contemporary music.

It鈥檚 the start of the week and Shaun has a brand new Liked and Shared track to kick off the week. Essentially it鈥檚 a rebrand of the Single of the Week (鈥淭hey鈥檝e re-badged it you fool鈥) and we鈥檒l give it the first play today.

As the 大象传媒 Proms kicks off on 大象传媒 Radio 3 and 大象传媒 Sounds, Shaun is joined by the face of the Proms 鈥 Katie Derham to discuss the role of borrowing and copying in classical music and how this relates to sampling in contemporary music.

As part of the Proms this year there is a season entitled Beg Steel and Borrow which is a range of work focussing on composers who have borrowed, copied or quoted from each other. Ranging from the 16th century practice of composers reworking popular melodies, through to the contemporary technique of sampling, the proms this year present a variety of work that look to the past for inspiration.

As part of this, Katie joins us this week to highlight a classical track and discuss with Shaun how this has been sampled in a contemporary track.

We kick off on Monday with Same Old Thing by The Streets from their 2002 debut album, Original Pirate Material which samples Anton铆n Dvo艡谩k's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", 1st Movement

The Proms run from 30th July 鈥 11th September 鈥 6 Weeks of orchestra concerts for live audiences at the Royal Albert Hall. Every Prom will be live on 大象传媒 Radio 3 and 大象传媒 Sounds with 20 Proms on TV And the iPlayer.

Plus, Monday also sees our Music News journalist Matt Everitt joining with the latest Music News and another Small Claims Court caller joins with their claim to fame.
All this alongside GoldSoundZ kicks off the show with 30 minutes of 6 Music BANGERS!
