Day 12: Red Button - Basketball

The women's basketball quarter-finals provide scintillating action on the court.

The women's basketball quarter-finals begin as China and Serbia compete for a place in the semi-finals. The Serbians are ranked eighth and the Chinese ninth, so this is set to be a very close game on the court. China beat fellow quarter-finalists Belgium and Australia in the preliminary rounds, as well as completing a dominant victory over Puerto Rico. The Serbians beat Canada and South Korea but have registered a loss, against Spain, in the prelims. The winner will face the US or Australia, who are the two highest ranked sides in the world.

World number one and world number two, the US and Australia respectively, face off in the women's basketball quarter-finals. The US have a very strong history in this sport, winning eight of the 11 golds in the sport's history, Australia have picked up three silver medals but are yet to take a gold. The North American side are favourites going into this match and the winners will play either Serbia or China in the semi-finals.

Japan and Belgium meet in the next of the women's basketball quarter-finals. Making it through to the semi's guarantees a medal match so many see the quarter-finals as a pivotal game. Japan have not moved into the semi-finals before and the hosts will be looking to make history in the event. Ranked tenth in the world in this event, the host nation's opposition are stronger, ranked sixth. The winner of this quarter-final will face either France or Spain in a semi-final with the gold medal match on the line.

In the final of the four quarter-finals, the French women's basketball team take on Spain for a place in the semi-finals. Ranked fifth and third respectively, these two sides will compete on the court for the right to play Japan or Belgium in the last four. Spain made the final in 2016 but ended up losing to the US, while France made it to the bronze medal match before eventually finishing fourth. Watch the beginning of this match.
