Pause For Thought
I’ve been a bit teary lately. Some might say it runs in the family as my mum is prone to some waterworks and my Dad has been known get misty eyed for the underdog on TV talent shows. But for me it’s been something specific. The other day on the subway, a performer boarded with his blasting sound system and started his routine, flipping and hanging from the overhead poles. But most eyes were on a baby girl in her pram – she can’t have been more than a year old. As soon as the music started she began to smile ear to ear, and bop her little body to the beat. A woman called out ‘You dance, baby girl!’ÌýÌý
Even the readers and snoozers of the carriage came to life – everyone started to sway with her and wave their arms. I was surprised to find tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.Ìý
Ìý
It’s happened a lot lately whenever I see anyone dancing with a sense of joy and freedom.
Ìý
Then the other day a question floated to mind, when I was in the middle of something– when didÌýyouÌýstop dancing? It hung in the air above my head, refusing to be ignored.Ìý
Ìý
I grew up dancing every morning – on the path of bhakti - the yoga of the heart, singing and dancing are considered the highest form of worship because they engage breath, mind, and body fully - truly love in motion. But I’ve become sedentary and stiff…thanks to this new screen focused world of the past year. It’s easy for me to forget the joy of moving with abandon.
Ìý
One of my favourite passages from the Bhagavata Purana describes how as the heart of the lover of God melts, they might laugh, sing or dance ‘for they are indifferent to public opinion.’
Ìý
So I’m not doing it in the park or on the train — YET— just in my apartment! But I’ve decided to answer that hanging question by dancing every day – even if it’s just for 5 or 10 minutes – 20 if I can manage it. I dance because I’m alive; I dance in honour of everyone I’ve lost in the past year; I dance in prayer and gratitude and love…
Ìý
And it feels *amazing*!!!Ìý
