Nicki Chapman sits in, with Ruby Wax and The Specials

Nicki Chapman sits in for Zoe and chats to Ruby Wax about her new ´óÏó´«Ã½ series, When Ruby Met.... Plus The Specials have live music recorded from home.

It's another Friends Phone In Friday with Nicki Chapman.

Actress and comedian Ruby Wax looks back at some of her seminal encounters from her 1990's chat show in a new three-part series for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two and iPlayer, When Ruby Met.... Across the three episodes, Ruby will reflect not only on who she interviewed, but also her unique and refreshing interviewing style and reveal how she obtained such extraordinary access to such world-famous stars, including Grace Jones, Pamela Anderson, Roseanne Barr, Evander Holyfield, Carrie Fisher, Imelda Marcos, OJ Simpson, Sharon Stone, Tom Hanks, Madonna, the Spice Girls and one particularly memorable encounter with a future US President and his new girlfriend - a Mr. Donald Trump and Melania.

The Specials perform music from their new album, Protest Songs – 1924 -2012. The Specials emerged in the late 1970s as the multiracial flagship of the 2 Tone movement, and sang of racism, unemployment and injustice making a very clear political statement every time they stepped on stage. Now in 2021, in a world of social, racial and political unrest, the band have made a new album of Protest Songs and are once again reflecting the society we live in and taking a stand against all forms of injustice.

Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, Zoe and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners and more music than you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a Pause For Thought from Kate Bottley and listeners on the line as Nicki entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Let me just do a little disclaimer before we go any further, Zoe, no one was hurt, well, apart from my pride that is. A split-second slip of concentration and I ended up bumping into someone else. The angle of the impact meant that despite a low speed, the air bags in my car went off, it was all rather shocking. As I took a minute in the dust filled vehicle, to process what had just happened and to check that I could still wriggle my toes and fingers, a voice came from the speakers and filled the car. ‘Don’t be afraid. You’ve been in an accident, try not to worry.’ÌýÌý‘God?!’ I said out loud and then quickly followed that up with the thought ‘Drats it’s man’ and then of course I worried that the accident had been more serious than I thought and perhaps this was it. I needn’t have panicked, it wasn’t God, but a lovely human from a central call centre that gets automatically notified when the air bags go off and stays on the line until in person help arrives. I suddenly didn’t feel quite so alone or scared, someone, even though I couldn’t see them was with me.

Ìý

In the bible, the phrase ‘Do not be afraid’ or ‘Do not fear’ appears 58 times and usually it’s the first thing that angels say. Gabriel to Mary when he tells her she’s going to be Jesus mum, and the heavenly host to the Shepherds on the hillside in the nativity story. And while I suspect a supernatural being telling you to not worry might be easier said than done, the reassurance in soothing tones that everything will be ok is the perfect balm in a moment of panic.

Ìý

My angel from the call centre, using the car’s sat nav, traced where I was and sent help and despite passers by stopping too, he stayed on the line, chatting to me, telling me he wouldn’t leave and reassuring me until he was certain I was ok. I’ll never know his name but I’ll never forget that in a dramatic and traumatic moment his presence and his words, felt heaven sent, and while of course I’m determined to not put myself in that position again, I have resolved to try and be an angel to others by being in just the right place, with the right words, at the right time.
