Ed Sheeran calls Zoe with an update on his upcoming album, "=". Ed is an era-defining pop megastar, who was awarded an MBE for his services to music and charity in 2017. He's the proud recipient of four Grammys; four Ivor Novello鈥檚, six BRIT Awards (including two consecutive wins for 鈥楪lobal Success鈥� in 2018 and 2019); seven Billboard Awards and so much more. At the end of 2019, he was presented with the Official Chart Company鈥檚 first-ever 鈥楴o.1 Artist of the Decade鈥� award following a host of accomplishments including the most No.1鈥檚 across the UK鈥檚 Official Singles and Albums chart from the years 2010-2019.
AJ Odudu looks ahead to Channel 4's Black to Front Project, part of their on-going commitment to improve Black representation on screen and more widely in the TV industry. As part of the project, The Big Breakfast is making a one-off return to screens almost 30 years after first launching. A staple of the channel鈥檚 morning schedule from 1992 to 2002, The Big Breakfast defied the rules when it came to breakfast telly. With its original anarchic spirit, distinctive energy and unique sense of humour reimagined through an unashamedly Black British lens, the live two-hour special will be hosted by Mo Gilligan and AJ, flanked by a mix of famous guests to kick start the day with a bang.
Plus Zoe speaks to Nicky Byrne from Westlife to reveal the final set to be released from Radio 2 Live, a series of exclusive concerts hosted across the UK, to celebrate the return of live music. Zoe鈥檚 releasing one fabulous set every day this week, from Texas, Westlife, Steps and Manic Street Preachers. Squirrels.听听How do we feel about squirrels?听听I saw one the other day鈥� how cute!听听鈥�.except that he was busy eating the seeds I had put in a birdfeeder stuck on the outside of my window. The squirrel, let鈥檚 call him Cyril 鈥� it鈥檚 what we always do, isn鈥檛 it, name them? 鈥� is pretty smart, he understands the concept of glass.听听I gesticulated wildly, I threw something soft at the window, I tapped it 鈥� not a flinch!听听I got my camera, and did the flash disturb him?听听Not a jot!听听
听
Then I started to lift the window - and he scarpered.听听He understands the concept of glass!听听Who knew?! Now, I know the old saying, 鈥淩ats are rats, pigeons are rats with wings and squirrels are rats with good PR鈥� but, despite knowing he鈥檚 not to be encouraged, I can鈥檛 help feeling a sort of a bond with him.听听He鈥檚 got a name now, after all.
听
I didn鈥檛 realise I was such a softie until l started feeding birds. I put out some bread once and watched some magpies having a bite at it, and I said to them鈥�. 鈥渃lear off you ugly, big brutes!听听That鈥檚 not for you 鈥� that鈥檚 for the cute little ones!鈥澨鼿ow arbitrary!听听How terribly British!听听My 鈥渃are鈥� for animals is completely capricious 鈥� I鈥檒l feed you if听I听think you鈥檙e cute.听听I suspect most of us are like that 鈥� we like ladybirds, we don鈥檛 like beetles.听Why?听听They鈥檙e the same!

It鈥檚 probably a good thing to want to favour the small, the fragile 鈥� and in my faith that鈥檚 pretty close to God鈥檚 heart.听听But there鈥檚 a wider truth I also believe: that the whole of creation, the big and the small, the cute and the ugly, all of life 鈥� animal and human - is valuable and to be respected and nurtured.听听Just as it seems daft, unjust even, to only feed or care for one group of birds over another, surely we have to be concerned for the welfare of all with whom we share this planet 鈥� from refugees to royalty. We are all made and valued by God 鈥� yes, even you, Cyril the squirrel鈥ou鈥檙e simply a rat with a fluffy tail, but hey, you have your place鈥t鈥檚 just not in my bird feeder!
