Comedian Paul Whitehouse chats to Zoe about starring as Grandad in Only Fools and Horses The Musical and actor David Harewood has published his memoir, I Don't Belong Here.

Comedy giant Paul Whitehouse tells Zoe about returning to the stage as Grandad in Only Fools and Horses The Musical. The re-opening of the show will form part of this year's 40th anniversary celebrations of the legendary 大象传媒 sitcom, which first graced our screens on 8th September 1981 with the episode 'Big Brother' and it's been making millions of people laugh ever since. John Sullivan鈥檚 iconic and record-breaking television series has been turned into a critically acclaimed home-grown West End musical spectacular. With a script and original score by John鈥檚 son, Jim Sullivan and Paul Whitehouse, the musical reacquaints fans with Britain鈥檚 most loveable rogues, to experience the classic comedy brought to life once again through 20 ingenious and hilarious songs.

Actor and presenter David Harewood has published his first memoir, I Don't Belong Here, a deeply personal exploration of the duality of growing up both Black and British. David was born in Birmingham but his parents are originally from Barbados, moving to England in the 50s and 60s. He trained as an actor at London鈥檚 Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is best known for his roles in Homeland and Supergirl. His critically acclaimed 大象传媒 documentary Psychosis and Me received a BAFTA nomination for best documentary.

Having never read the book, fifty is nonetheless a number I associate, with shades of grey.听听And grey was what I expected, this week at my school reunion, held an astonishing fifty years after my first day at school. Determined not to look too frumpy, I stuffed orange wedged espadrilles into my handbag, the flat trainers I needed for the walk from the car, firmly laced onto my sensibly socked feet.听听Half a century had passed since the day I followed my long-suffering sister Helen onto the packed commuter train听that took us to school.听听Starting a pattern of losing my bag or my season ticket, making her late, being in trouble, and shattering what to that point, had been her own, little-sister-free, place of sanctuary.听

听

I had entered the school world, one of public humiliation on the netball court, board dusters thrown as missiles by teachers, and compulsory school dinners all perfectly normal in those long past days. With uncharacteristic trepidation,听having removed my laceups,听I arrived at the hosts flat in North London entering a room of 15 assorted, welcoming women, some grey and others distinctly not. Stunned momentarily into silence I looked听around a room full of colour; books formed a colour coordinated rainbow on the wall, a cabinet filled with cut glass sparkled like jewels; the sun shone through a wide-open French听window to the leafy lush garden below.听听There was not one shade of grey.听

Plied with the most delicious home-made salads, squidgy cheeses, and baking hot pastries, washed down with tiny glasses of chilled bubbly, the women sat up and opened up.听听We shared memories of trials and tribulations, schoolgirl fears and dreams intertwined with present day successes, frustrations and failures.听听We discussed retirement and tentative plans for a future filled with fun, fulfilling projects and expanding families. Tomorrow is Yom Kippur the fast day of atonement.听听It鈥檚 the holiest day when Jewish people reflect on the past year, ask people we have hurt for forgiveness, and plan for a better year ahead.听听People pray to be inscribed in the book of life for the coming year. Reconnecting with these so-not-grey women from my past, reminded me that life鈥檚 book is most blessed when shared, particularly over a warm pastry, with my big sister, and ideally, in a fancy pair of bright orange espadrilles.
