Fastest finger first: what does the word goulash mean?

"What," Sean says, "does the word, goulash, mean (and it's not a stew)?"

"Fastest finger first," Sean says. "No googling. You have heard the word, goulash, but what does it mean? You know the Hungarian dish?"

Janet goes with gravy.

"It's good," Sean says, "but it's not right!"

Thomasina buzzes in with rice.

Not right.

"Stew," says Patrick in Derry.

Not right.

Patrick Parsons in Malaysia also says stew.

Which is still not right.

Beef stew, from Pawnie, is also not right.

Belfast listener, Jim, suggests cabbage.

"I see where you're coming from," Sean says. "But not right."

Mickey Roddy says, "Goulash is a way of dealing cards."

"OK, but not what I'm looking for."

Davy in Bangor sends in a recipe for goulash.

"I just want to know what it means," Sean says.

Brian in Craigavon comes up with an answer that Sean does not read out.

"Naughty naughty, Brian in Craigavon. I know by your answer that you googled! Yes you did."

"Sean," says Peter with the Bad Back, "goulash is what you get when you get chewing gum stuck on your eyelid."

"Goulash," Sean says, "means either herdsman, or cowboy."

With music from Chris Montez, Blondie, Bitty McLean, Jimmy Nail, and more.
