"I was chatting to a friend," says Joe in Loughinisland, "about things that bring bad luck. So if you smashed a mirror it was said would bring you seven years of bad luck."

"Yes," Sean says. "I wonder why it was seven years bad luck?"

"Also," Joe says, "if you bought a new pack of playing cards you would burn the joker to take away the bad luck."

"That's a new one! I never heard of that one!"

"Or," Joe says, "never throw a dirty nappy onto the fire!"

"Are you sure you got this right?" Sean says. "Who would do that?"

"It will give the child cramps," Joe explains.

"I hope the child's not wearing it!"
