The annual New Year’s Day concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic at the Vienna Musikverein is a moment to remember the past and look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism. For the first time since the start of the Covid pandemic the traditional highlight of the Viennese calendar will be performed in front of a live audience in the glittering Musikverein concert hall. But those of us not lucky enough to be there in person can still enjoy the swirling waltzes, rousing marches and uplifting polka’s as Petroc Trelawny introduces the concert live from Vienna. Led from the podium by conductor Daniel Barenboim in a programme the mixes old favourites and new discoveries which celebrate amongst other things: mythical beasts, exotic locations and unexpectedly…newspapers. The orchestra say the concert is a New Year’s Day greeting to people all over the world in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace, and who wouldn’t wish for all that in 2022?
