Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

When I recall my childhood, the first image that comes to mind isn鈥檛 my bedroom full of Star Wars figures, it鈥檚 our garage. Barely big enough to fit our old Ford Cortina, on a Saturday morning Dad would roll the car down the driveway so we had room to build stuff. My favourite project was a broken go-cart we found. On that garage floor we gave it new wheels, attached a sporty plastic windshield, and with dad on the street looking out for traffic, I would race down the driveway clutching the steering rope for grim life, feeling a rush of excitement no crashes and cuts could dampen.

Dad was quite the inventor back then. When rolling blackouts hit our city, he set up a bank of car batteries in the garage that automatically switched emergency lights on when the power cut out. Clever. Not all his inventions were successful, though. The Tony Voysey Solar Hot Water System made of coiled black tubing on the roof never did make water hot, and the Tony Voysey Letter Detector鈥攎ade of lasers and a stop-go traffic light system鈥攏ever did save us a walk to the mail box! But that doesn鈥檛 matter now. Because whether what was made worked or didn鈥檛, what was really happening in that garage was a young boy was being shaped by the presence of his dad.听

I don鈥檛 think anyone who鈥檚 missed out on having a father needs a research paper to prove their importance, but the papers are there鈥攎ultiple surveys showing the unique role a father plays in a child鈥檚 wellbeing. This makes sense to me as in scripture, human parenting is patterned on God鈥檚 parenting. When our fathers bring nurture and protection I believe they imitate God鈥檚 own nurture and protection, which makes us flourish. We lost my father in September鈥攖o pancreatic cancer. At the funeral locals spontaneously paid him tribute, workmates remembered a man of integrity and fun, pallbearers broke down in tears recalling his impact on their lives, and I told stories of battery banks and letter detectors.听听My father wasn鈥檛 perfect. Like every father and mother, his parenting could fail to imitate heaven鈥檚 parenting. But when it did, it gave me a glimpse of God鈥檚 nurture and protection鈥攔ight there, as we fixed go-carts on the garage floor.
