"I can only imagine they shrank in the wash."

Stretch wonders why his trousers no longer fit. He blames the washing machine.

"Does anyone these days still have a box of buttons?" asks Stretch. "You know, for mending shirts and trousers? We still have one and I was glad of one when my trouser button popped off. I can only imagine they shrank in the wash!"

"Of course they shrank!" Sean says. "When I was younger we had all those things in a drawer, and we always had a spare zip fastener. And there were various lengths. Maybe your mother would have knitted a cardigan. Knitting needles used to be numbered. You never see them. Do you remember the red bit of wax like a crayon? If you were sending a parcel to England, you would put this red wax on it! You never see that nowadays. I think we should bring back zip fasteners."

With music from David Essex, Dion, The Mavericks, and more.
