Pause For Thought
A few days ago littlest Bottley, my Arthur, turned 18 and with it came the realisation that I am no longer the mother of two children I am now the mother of two adults. Asked what he wanted to do to mark the occasion he decided he鈥檇 like to take his Grandad, who is also Arthur, for a pint.听听This was a big deal, partly because my lad isn鈥檛 a great fan of new experiences or places but mostly because there were times when we weren鈥檛 sure we were ever going to get to this particular rite of passage.听
听
It was a good while ago that my lad鈥檚 Grandad, my Dad, sat in one of those little rooms while his consultants talked diagnosis, treatment and time frames, and since then all of us who love him have learnt a strange, new language we never thought we鈥檇 need to, the difference between radio and chemo, MRI and CT, we are all so fluent I think anyone of us could audition for a part on Casualty. In those early days we are all very worried of course, unsure of what the future had in store, my Dad was worried too but also philosophical and when asked would say 鈥業鈥檇 just like to see my Grandkids grow up.鈥� There鈥檚 a hymn called 鈥楪reat is thy faithfulness鈥�, it鈥檚 got a great tune, and words that get me every time, the final verse starts 鈥楶ardon, for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide鈥� but this is the line, 鈥楽trength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.鈥� A prayer of sorts that asks for the fortitude to face a difficult day while faithfully holding on to a belief that better times will come.听
听
Dad鈥檚 doing well, some routine maintenance here and there, but ok. And as Arthur junior, his youngest Grandchild, led Arthur senior to the bar, and said 鈥楥鈥檓on Grandad what you having?鈥�, photographs were taken, a bemused bar man looked on surprised at how emotional a group of people seemed to get over a couple of pints, my Dad, winked at me and smiled.听听The tears soon turned to laughter though, when after patting down his pockets my son, Arthur Junior turned to me and said 鈥楳um, can I borrow twenty quid?鈥� He might be all grown up but somethings never change.
