Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I鈥檝e been to a Monastery Zoe, Now, knowing me as the noisy extrovert I am you might have thought I鈥檓 not naturally suited to the reserved quiet pace of monks but I loved it, it had a cat, brews its own beer and has exceptionally kind and wise brothers. I shouldn鈥檛 have favourites when it comes to monks, but Brother Anselm is mine. Over 40 years a monk and dedicated to a life of frugalness and austerity. The brothers own no possessions, little contact with the world outside and don鈥檛 watch telly. They pray all the time, even getting up to go to church in the middle of the night. It鈥檚 not a life for me.

I asked Brother Anselm about the difficult sacrifices it takes to be a monk, 鈥業t鈥檚 true, I have given up so many things鈥 he said, 鈥榖ut I have gained something bigger and more wonderful, I can鈥檛 remember the last time I worried about something that didn鈥檛 need worrying about.鈥 I let that sink in. You see because the monastery takes care of his material needs, he doesn鈥檛 worry about what he鈥檒l eat or wear or who鈥檚 turn it is to take the bins out, leaving Brother Anselm to concentrate on worrying, or rather praying, about the stuff that really needs his attention.听

Jesus said, 鈥楧o not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself, each day has enough trouble of its own鈥 Worries are overwhelming, the ones on my own doorstep and of course the worries of the world, especially just now. But in Jesus鈥 words and in the wisdom of Brother Anselm, I鈥檓 reminded that I don鈥檛 need to worry about everything all at once and all the time. I also like the thought that in the wee small hours if the worries of the world are making me restless, and everything seems too much, Brother Anselm and the rest of the monks are, and will continue to be, sat in the darkness doing some of the worrying and praying about the big stuff on all my behalf. I wasn鈥檛 allowed to leave the monastery without tasting some of the monk鈥檚 lovely ale, of course, and thanks to the brothers and the beer I went on my way a little less worried.
